Spear Master: An Adorable and Addictive Gem

After fiddling around with the Atari vault, the first game I purchased for my Atari VCS was Spear Master. Spear Master is a brilliant indie game, developed and published by Mikel Fick (Osarion). The gameplay is simple, you throw your spear up into the air to split tar-like balls in half until they can’t split any longer. The balls are constantly bouncing from one side of the screen to the other and back. With each level, environments are constantly changed to alter the path of the balls, giving them a less predictable pattern.

I thoroughly enjoyed the addictive nature of dodging and throwing, as well as the rush of completing a level. Osarion beautifully takes such a simple premise and evolves it into something endlessly charming. Every aspect of the game proves that it’s worth the small price you pay for the title, from the fun music while playing to the amazing art in the end credits. A solid variation of enemy types, environments, costumes, and bosses make the game well worth investigating. The dialogue is charming as heck, and I refuse to take off my penguin outfit.

Don’t have an Atari VCS? NO WORRIES! The game is also available on Steam for purchase. The game is an incredibly fun time waster and has tons of replay-ability. I have already accumulated over 15 hours and I’m sure that I will play at least another 15 before I take a break. That well justifies buying a game that’s under $20 to me personally. You can colour me interested in regard to the future of Osarion as a dev. With Osarion’s games Unsung Warriors as well as Decks & Daggers around the corner, I will certainly be buying to review.
