What to Watch This Easter: Completing Your Holiday Movie List

By Daniel Sumpton | Misfit Media Columnist

Everybody has their go-to movie or movies for their favourite holidays. It’s common to know at least one Easter enthusiast that watches William Wyler’s Ben-Hur when the time of year comes (that person might even be you). Other people are the type to keep the Easter Bunny fun alive with Tim Hill’s Hop every year. It is always fun to soak in the nostalgia and watch the same film every Easter, but why not mix in something new with your go-to holiday experience? Avoid being the boring friend or relative this year and throw in a surprising new film to your typical list.

While searching through films produced within the last couple years that could potentially go into my Easter movie list, a particular one caught my interest when I found a YouTube video with the film’s name and rapper Kanye West in the title. The video is of Pastor Adam Tyson, who explains that Kanye West would hang out at the same church that was used in order to film parts of the movie Selfie Dad. He also explained that Kanye West was enthusiastic about the idea of being included in the film with the use of his own music. With such an adamant endorsement from Kanye West himself, I would have been mad not to watch it.

What is Selfie Dad?

Selfie Dad , directed by Brad J. Silverman, is a Christian family film that follows struggling father and believer Ben Marcus who stumbles into internet fame. Ben finds comfort in the Bible while dealing with his newfound situation that provides him with many predicaments. I was personally impressed by the realistic portrayal of a content creator on YouTube, or in Selfie Dad’s case “UTOO.” I found Selfie Dad to be sweet and quaint. It is well worth a watch while scouting for a new Easter favourite.

I reached out to the director of Selfie Dad for thoughts on the movie being the ideal Easter Film. When asked if Selfie Dad is a good film to watch with family this Easter, the film’s director answered,

“Absolutely! We made Selfie Dad for families. We set out to make a clean, funny, family film, and at the same time we wanted to illustrate the importance of dads sharing the Bible with their kids. Easter is such a reflective time as we think about the death and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ – so what a perfect time to re-commit ourselves to pursuing Christ through the Bible in our daily lives as families. We hope watching Selfie Dad as a family will be greatly entertaining, but far more than that, we hope it inspires!”
